This camera is a gift to my Dad, who proudly wore its functional counterpart around his neck throughout my childhood. I constructed this 1977 Nikon from a medium often found in the recycling bin, because beauty often lies in the moments and materials overlooked. The cardboard camera is meant to remind my Dad of the beauty not only within the memories captured by his photographs, but in our many shared moments left uncaptured.
I sculpted, painted, and fired a Volkswagen van planter box to gift to my art teacher, who proudly owns a yellow VW van, and loves talking about his “plant friends.” His grateful, ecstatic reaction made the many hours of sculpting well worth it.
These vases bridge two mediums that I rarely see together: wire and glass. I constructed a wire frame for both pieces, and blew glass within the frames for a “bubbled” effect.
The bulging glass is meant to describe the feeling of being caged in or suffocated, and the glass is breaking free of its boundaries.
